Large watches have always been one of Glycine’s specialties. Founded in the year 1914 by Eugene Meylan, the brand at fist produced voluminous timepieces with gold and platinum cases for solvent men. The production of watches containing mechanical movements continued into the 1970s, even though the consumer was by then almost exclusively demanding quartz timekeepers.

This Swiss company has always been one of the front-runners for new trends in mechanical watches, a fact that has helped secure its existence even during times of crises. For example, in 1938 Gylcine was one of the twenty-nine exhibitors at the first Basel Fair after the Great Depression and ensuing world economic crises of the early 1930s. Since then, Glycine hasn’t missed a single Basel Fair. After the war, Gylcine was one of the first Swiss brands to put its money on the automatic movement. In the year 1996 the company once again took up designing large-format watches, something that represented one of the traditional firm’s most important production arms in the 1950’s and 1960s. Katherina Brechbuhler, who manages this family-owned company along with her father Hans, plans on maintaining the typical look of these timekeepers powered by reliable, quality, and reasonably priced ETA movements.

Glycine Watch SA is known more today as a specialist for pilot’s watches, as once again illustrated by the plenitude of aviator-style timepieces introduced in the past year. The Airman 7 Plaza Mayor is a new take on Glycine’s signature theme, exhibiting a beguiling overall simplicity and a stately size-in a square case measuring 53 x 53 mm. To achieve the display of four time zones it utilizes three independent mechanical movements: an automatic ETA 2893, and two smaller decorated ETA 2671s. This year these large watches, which are actually three timekeepers in one, will be offered for the first time in two titanium versions.

The brand has also introduced a number of new classically round timepieces this year, such as the Incursore line featuring two new limited edition chronographs housed in black PVD cases: the Incursore Black Jack Manual is outfitted with an ETA Valijoux 7750 caliber offering a second time zone alongside the chronograph functions. The matte black Incursore Black Jack Complique runs on the ETA Valijoux 7751 caliber and features an integrate complete calendar. These models are limited to 50 and 100 pieces, respectively.
